ADHD

What is ADHD?

ADHD is called attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.  This disorder can affect adults and children both, presenting with symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.  In children, ADHD can greatly interfere with functioning and development.

Inattention causes difficulty in remaining on task, lacking persistence, and appearing disorganized.  The first impulse is to blame this type of inattention on a lack of understanding or simple defiance.

Hyperactivity is the inability to stay still, constantly moving when it is not appropriate.  In children, the constant motion can be fidgeting, tapping, or excessive talking.  In adults, it can be seen as extreme restlessness.

Impulsivity keeps a person from thinking through a situation before making decisions.  Not considering the consequences of their decisions or behavior can lead to being simply socially intrusive and escalate to making poor life choices.

After proper evaluation and diagnosis, MaxHealth Family, Internal, & Sports Medicine will suggest the appropriate option for treatment.  Deciding on the appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan will most likely include getting input from different individuals in the patient’s life (other family members, healthcare providers, teachers, etc.).

Treatments for ADHD can include one or a combination of the following:

  • Behavior therapy for the patient (and parents if the patient is a child)

  • Medication
