Allergies

What kind of treatment is available for allergies?

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, allergies rank as the third most common chronic disease in children and are some of the most common chronic conditions in the United States.  Allergy can develop at any time, so even if you have never been allergic to anything before, an allergy can present itself out of the blue.

Severe allergies can be life-threatening while milder allergies can produce occasional mild discomfort or intensely irritating symptoms on a chronic basis.  Food, medication, animal dander, or pollen are the most common triggers for allergies.  The mildest symptoms of allergies include coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose.  Chronic colds are often diagnosed as being triggered by allergies.

Treating allergies effectively requires determining the source of the allergy.  Blood, skin, nasal, or challenge testing may be required to figure out what is triggering a reaction.  Challenge testing involves being exposed to different types of allergens and watching for a reaction.
