STD Testing

Should I be tested for STDs?

An STD is a sexually transmitted disease.  STD testing should be done anytime you think you may have symptoms after having sexual contact with another person, especially if not in a committed relationship, and even if they are mild symptoms that do not bother you too much.  Some symptoms of an STD to be watching for include:

  • Sores on or around the genitals, butt cheeks, or thighs

  • Burning when you urinate or having to urinate frequently

  • Pain, irritation, swelling, or itching of the vagina, vulva, anus, or penis

  • An unknown discharge from the vagina or penis

The cause of the above symptoms could be yeast infections, urinary tract infections, or even pimples, but you just have no way of knowing unless you get tested.

Unfortunately, some STDs can be present with no visible symptoms.  It is critical to get tested is you have had unprotected sex, suspect that your partner may have had unprotected sex with someone else, or you find out that your partner has an STD.  It is also important to be candid with your doctor and talk about any symptoms you have experienced and the types of sex you have engaged in.

STDs can lead to serious health problems if not treated properly, as well as make you more likely to contract other STDs.  Although the idea of getting tested may be scary, it would be worse to have an STD and not know it.
