Ryan Matthiesen, DO

Sports and Family Medicine

Dr Matthiesen, an Oklahoma native, was drawn into the world of medicine at an early age. Growing up as a competitive athlete in baseball, basketball, and soccer, he often encountered the need for medical treatment for a variety of acute and chronic injuries. Through this exposure, he grew to understand the importance of regular preventative care and prompt treatment that was necessary to remain at the top of his game. Inspired by the exceptional care from his doctors and training staff, Dr Matthiesen made it his dream to provide his patients with the same quality care, compassion, and concern.

Before calling Texas his home, Dr. Matthiesen completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Oklahoma. Drawn to the holistic approach of osteopathic medicine, he then attended Oklahoma State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. While there his principle focus was that of treating the body as a whole unit of mind, body and spirit, as well as improved care of the musculoskeletal system through advanced palpation and manipulation. This comprehensive combination serves his patients well as an alternative way to address acute and chronic issues without relying solely on medication and traditional therapies.

Upon graduation, Dr. Matthiesen transitioned to his Family Medicine residency at Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth. While there, he was responsible for servicing one of the most in need and at-risk health populations in south Fort Worth. The experience strengthened his desire to help his patients incorporate activity and a healthy lifestyle into a treatment plan while focusing less on medication and more invasive treatments. Following his Family Medicine residency, Dr. Matthiesen went on to complete a Sports Medicine fellowship at Texas Tech University. There he worked closely with all of the sports, including helping the women’s soccer team win the Big 12 conference and providing care to several Olympians on the Texas Tech track team.

Dr. Matthiesen has continued his passion of working alongside college athletes and professionals by presiding as the current head team physician for the University of North Texas, as well as being a member of the medical staff for Texas Woman's University. He has also helped care for non-traditional sports that are popular in Texas, including caring for world champion bull riders and professional motocross teams.

Dr. Matthiesen incorporates both his family and sports medicine training across the spectrum of his patients. Life can be viewed as a sport for all ages, the goals and desires just change over time. The same principles that get a high school football player back on the field can also help a father to be able to play basketball with his child, or a grandparent to be able to safely hold their grandchild. Physical activity has been proven to be an effective treatment for many of the most common physical and mental health concerns we face as a society today, from high blood pressure to diabetes to depression.

When not in the clinic or on a university field or court, Dr. Matthiesen can be found at home with his wife and their three beloved Rottweilers. He also has a passion for traveling and learning about different cultures, world history, and natural wonders.
